Andy Acho, worldwide director of EnvironmentaL Outreach and Strategy for Ford Motor Company, spoke to PE about his position, and Ford's proactive environmental programs that make this company a Leader in setting a precedent for green business.
What is Ford Motor Company's stance when it comes the environment?
We need to do much more than simply meet the law. We need to be environmentally proactive and do things that are not required by law that are good for the environment and good for business. My job is to champion proactive environmental actions that we should be doing because they make sense.
What standards have you met?
Ford is the only major automobile manufacturer to have each and every one of its manufacturing facilities in 25 countries certified to ISO 14001. As a result, we now have management systems in place to address all aspects of the environment. We've also asked our suppliers to become certified and we help them with the process.
What kinds goals have you set?
We want to reduce first, reuse second and then recycle. People always think of recycling as a terrific thing but it's at the bottom of the good food chain. We want to emphasize the reduction. Whereas the back end may save six percent on waste, you're losing the...
