Toronto -- Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has announced it will license software practitioners who meet specific criteria as professional engineers.
Individuals whose work experience is mainly in the area of software design and development but whose academic background is in something other than an accredited computer engineering or an information technology related program will now be eligible, provided they meet licensing requirements.
"This is an important change and a first step in introducing professional regulation in the software industry," said PEO president Patrick Quinn, a principal in the Toronto consulting engineering firm of Quinn Dressel Associates.
Recently, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia announced a similar move.
