Like many small businesses, PetFoodDirect.com was started out of the back of its founder's Chevy Blazer. But the dog's life is over for Jon Roska Jr., founder, chief operating officer and co-owner of the start-up e-tailer, thanks to its first $10 million round of venture capital financing. The company, selling pet food and supplies to busy pet owners, is, now doing business out of a 25,000-square-foot warehouse facility in Montgomeryville, though it still has a long way to go to catch up, to its established competition such as Pets.com and Petopia.com.
Roska isn't worried.
"They may be better funded," he says of the competition, "but it all comes down to how you're run and how you're marketed. The biggest thing is how you take care of your customers, the things you do above and beyond."
Roska's other advantage? Dear old Dad.
Jon Roska Sr., chairman and co-owner of PetFoodDirect.com, is a direct marketer, owner of Roska Direct Marketing.
With PetFoodDirect.com's CEO, Geoff Walker, the company has 60 years of direct marketing experience at its disposal.
