Phelps Memorial Hospital Center has gone public with its campaign to raise at least $10 million over the next five years for a new emergency department.
The department, set to open in 2007, would have 30 beds, all in private rooms and be 20,000 square feet - three times as large as the current 14-bed facility. Six nursing positions would be added.
Construction is expected to start later this year, though no date has been set. That will depend on how quickly Phelps can start work on two other projects: a 100,000-square-foot medical services building and a parking area that may entail building a garage.
The emergency room campaign is part of a larger effort to raise $75 million over the next five years. Of that total, $50 million would fund a series of expansion projects, while the rest would pay for capital expenses.
"There's not one empty square foot in this institution. It's very difficult to expand programs within our current space," said Keith Safian, president and chief executive officer of Phelps.
