Philips Components is promising to ease OEMs' path to building high-definition television (HDTV) displays by making available a single-panel, liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) technology.
Called engaze, the single-panel solution, which Philips will exhibit today at the Society for Information Display show in San Jose, promises to significantly cut assembly time and cost for OEMs designing high-resolution digital TV displays and monitors that show text, graphics, or video. Philips' display technology will eliminate the need to align three separate panels and provide three sets of optics to generate and recombine red, green, and blue.
"This is clearly a significant announcement," said Kim Allen, an analyst at Stanford Resources Inc., San Jose. "Philips will energize the LCoS sector of the HDTV market."
