THE PLACE: Joughin Hardware, one of Lake County's oldest continuously operated, locally owned hardware stores.
THE LOCATION: 23 S. State St., in downtown Painesville.
THE PAST: Founded in 1877 by John Joughin Sr., the store has expanded during four generations of family ownership to occupy three storefronts along State Street and smaller, connecting buildings to the rear.
Family legend has it Mr. Joughin Sr., an immigrant to Cleveland from the Isle of Man in the British Isles, was hired by Gen. Jack Casement of Painesville to do plumbing work in his home, then stayed to open a plumbing supply shop.
The store expanded its wares as demand required. John Joughin Jr. took over for his father and ran the shop for 50 years, then handed off to his two sons, George and Walter. George's son Jeffrey W. Joughin, the current owner, started helping in...
