SOUTH BEND--Deep inside the cavern of the former AM General assembly plant on Chippewa Avenue is a relatively new company, Plastic Solutions Inc. Its three owners are in the midst of a moderately successful first year and are looking forward to an even better second year.
But something is happening at PSI that owners hope will give the company an extremely successful future.
Plastic Solutions Inc. is an injection molding firm. It was started as a result of the vision of three owners: Robert Tennyson, Fred Fuller and John Burgess. Each had been in the plastic injection industry, and each saw a need for a different kind of company. They developed their company mission statement, converted a warehouse into useable space, purchased equipment and were off and running.
It was their vision of unsurpassed quality--from the people they hire to the products they turn out--that gave them incentive to begin. Together with David Jastrzembski, vice president of quality, they came up with a mandatory quality training program in statistical process control for their employee. Coupled with empowerment, the program pushes aside the leave-your-brain-at-the-door mentality of the industry.
The classes have started and last week, certificates of achievement were passed out to 100 percent of the class....
