PORT AUSTIN - Port Austin at the very tip of Michigan's Thumb is in a prime location where you can watch the sun both rise and set on the water; not a bad vacation spot with its scenic surroundings and great views. According to Steve Schmidt it's a vacation community that Port Austin State Bank has been instrumental in building and sustaining since the bank first opened its doors in 1884. Schmidt, who is president/CEO of the bank, leads the bank along with his father, Peter, who now in his early '80s is still an active banker. He serves as chairman of the board of directors.
The village of Port Austin boasts many resorts and motels for vacationers. There are several parks in the area offering a variety of recreational activities. The Pinnebog River runs through Port Crescent State Park and it is perfect for canoeing. Local charter boat captains offer a variety of fishing excursions that go out into Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron.
Fifty years ago this year, Port Austin State Bank built a new headquarters a half-block from its original bank building. In 1997 the bank was completely remodeled to add office space, an ATM and a new three lane drive up system. The original bank building is now a popular restaurant in downtown Port Austin.
With assets in excess of $39 million, the bank is rooted in the Schmidt family name going back over 70 years. In 1918,...
