When it was time to replace its outdated science research facility, the University of California-San Diego contacted Portland-based ZGF Architects, which has designed research facilities for other universities.
However, unlike those, UCSD's $110 million structure will be built on a site that requires its long, glazed sides to face east and west rather than north and south. That direct sunlight presented a huge challenge for the firm, but it also will help the facility earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design platinum rating, according to Joe Collins, a partner at ZGF.
