More than half of the 345-kV Prairie Wind transmission project in Kansas has been energized, with full operation expected by year-end for a line aimed at boosting grid reliability and wind energy development in the gusty Midwest state.
Developer Prairie Wind Transmission LLC said in a June 5 news release that about 78 miles of the 108-mile, double-circuit line within the Southwest Power Pool Inc. footprint was energized June 4 and is now moving electricity between an existing substation near Wichita, Kan., to a new substation northeast of Medicine Lodge, Kan., near the 100-MW Flat Ridge I wind farm in Barber County.
