Pratt & Whitney says its PW4168 powerplant, in use on the Airbus A330, has received 180-minute extended twin-engine overwater operations (etops) approval following a certification test program of more than 20,000 hours in revenue service. The engine maker, which worked with Boeing to successfully received the first-ever pre- revenue flight approval for etops approval with United Airlines' first deliveries of Boeing 777 aircraft, said the PW4168 was first given 90-minute approval on Nov. 10, 1994. Further testing and completion of 3,000 cycles in late January "paved the way" for 120- minute approval on Feb. 6 of this year.
