SOON BUSINESSES WILL BE ABLE TO exchange documents such as purchase orders and invoices securely over the Internet, cutting the cost of carrying out business transactions.
Premenos Corp., a leader in Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) on IBM's AS/400 platform, will ship this month EDI/e, a server-based translator for Unix environments that routes information to EDI applications residing on different computer platforms. The client/server solution will support Microsoft Corp. Windows clients and add security to Unix-based EDI transactions.
Premenos claims the Internet is providing the first opportunity for businesses to exchange EDI messages independent of third-party value-add network (VAN) providers.
Most EDI users rely on VANs for network services and are billed for each transaction, in addition to paying fees for support and integration with in-house systems.
