The price of jet fuel has risen sharply during the last year. The most dramatic increase in the past several years occurred in third quarter 1996, according to the latest data available from TravelScan, a Bethesda, Md.-based aviation information company. Jet fuel prices have risen during the third quarter in recent years, but not as much as this year, according to the chart below. (The fuel data collected for the following two charts was obtained from the ten largest U.S. airlines: American Airlines, United Air Lines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, USAir, Continental Airlines, Trans World Airlines, Southwest Airlines, America West Airlines and Alaska Airlines.)
