NEC SuperScript 860 Rating: ****
Finally-a high-end 600dpi laser printer has broken through the $500 price barrier! The NEC SuperScript 860 stands out from the rest of the emerging low-cost 600dpi laser printer crowd. With a paper output of eight pages per minute, it's easily the zippiest printer we've tested for both text and graphics. This is partly due to the fact that the 860, using Adobe Print GearAdobe's new printer technology-is driven directly by your computer's CPU rather than its own. Therefore, the faster your PC, the faster the 860 will pump out paper. We got twice as much performance using the 860 with a 75MHz Pentium system than with a 33MHz 486. The 860 also printed most jobs at two to three times the speed of the 4ppm Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5L at comparable and excellent print quality-for close to the same price.
