MORRISVILLE - Raleigh-Durham International Airport's two fixed base operators, Southern Jet Inc. and Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation, are expanding their facilities and plan to hire a combined 95 new employees over the next couple of years.
Southern Jet and Piedmont Hawthorne could be viewed as miniature versions of RDU except they cater only to corporate, private and charter flights. Each operates its own terminal, lounge and catering operations, and both provide aircraft maintenance 24 hours a day.
If a celebrity or corporate fat cat flies into RDU, they are likely to use one of the FBOs.
As part of RDU's expansion plans, hangars and office space are being expanded for both companies. Southern Jet's hangar is being expanded from 25,000 to 50,000 square feet and its office space from 4,000 to 10,000 square feet Piedmont Hawthorne's hanger is being expanded from 40,000...
