Procom's Multimedia Station Pro for the PC and its Mac CD Station (both about $550 street) both ship with triple-speed CD-ROM drives. They also use external CD-ROM drives, although an internal drive is available for the PC.
The Mac CD-ROM drive is simply connected to the Mac's SCSI port. The tested PC version required inserting two cards--one SCSI interface card for connecting to the drive and a Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 sound card, which Procom labels as the Spectrum Multimedia-16....
