If overstuffed e-mail boxes slow down your messaging system, then consider the new WebFile Server and WebFile Client from Xythos (www.xythos.com). This client-server package allows users to exchange files via Internet-connected file servers-not by clogging up the e-mail system.
The software has earned high praises from early adopters. "It's been great," says Frank Tramontano, CTO at Pace University (www.pace.edu) and a current Xythos customer. "Now instead of our users copying files to diskettes, e-mailing large attachments, or burning CDs, they rely on Xythos's software to give them access from anywhere on the Internet."
The idea of storing files on an Internet-connected file server isn't particularly new. Numerous vendors offered such services, including XDrive (www.xdrive.com) and the now defunct IDrive. Tramontano considered xDrive's offering, but wanted the security of hosting the software on his own network.
Xythos fit the bill. The WebFile software resides on the enterprise network and enables customers to store, retrieve, and alter files using a WebDAV-compatible client such as Microsoft Office 2ooo. WebDAV (RFC 2518) is a series of HT-rP extensions that provides a standard interface for enabling remote users to alter Web documents.
