VENDOR UNVEILS CUSTOMER SERVICE, SALES SYSTEMS FOR THE WEB; ACQUIRES AUCTION SITE VENDOR
Somewhere on the way to market, Siebel 2000, the Internet-laden upgrade to Siebel Systems Inc.'s flagship customer-relationship management package, has morphed into Siebel eBusiness 2000, which was launched last week.
The eBusiness 2000 package, an umbrella name for Siebel's traditional applications and a Siebel.com line of Internet-based products, backs up the name change with Web-based sales, service, and marketing features. Coupled with last week's $444 million stock acquisition of auction vendor OpenSite Technologies Inc., the suite could help Siebel make a splash in E-commerce for consumers and businesses.
The products mark Siebel's entry into an unfamiliar market. Dot-com companies and E-commerce players are more likely to turn to Internet-focused vendors such as BroadVision, eGain Communications, and Kana Communications for customer service and sales capabilities. But the Siebel.com line of Internet-based products focuses on the niches dominated by the specialty vendors.
