Citing "alarming power consumption" from cryptocurrency mining, Public Citizen on June 25 asked the U.S. Department of Energy to reject a Canadian company's request to transmit electricity from the U.S. to British Columbia to support its cryptocurrency mining operations.
In a related release, Public Citizen noted that DMG Blockchain Solutions Inc.'s request for a power export license is the first to be submitted by a cryptocurrency company.
"The application by such a power-hungry industry requires further study and collaboration on the impact cryptomining has for power markets, consumers, the environment and the climate," said Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program, said in the release.
