The Institute of Medicine has begun issuing a series of reports on Dietary Reference Intakes (DRls), which will update and expand the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) set by the National Academy of Sciences since 1941. The first report reviews calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, and fluoride, all of which are related to bone health. Its key advice is that Americans and Canadians at risk for osteoporosis should consume between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day. The report can be purchased by calling (800) 624-6242; or sending $39 to the National Academy Press, 201 Constitution Ave, N.W., Washington, DC 20418; or ordering it at a discount online (http://www.nap.edu/low). The full text can also be read online. Nutrition Forum will carry a detailed summary in the next issue.
