GREENSBORO - Despite a tough 2001 capped by the devastating impact of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on its clients in the airline industry, Greensboro-based aircraft maintenance firm Timco is starting 2002 with more employees in the Triad than it had one year ago.
According to Business Journal research (see list of Largest Employers, pages 30-31), Timco currently has 1,474 full-time employees in the Triad. In the Largest Employers fist compiled a year ago, Timco reported 1,400 full-time employees.
Busy employees are a welcome sight to Timco General Manager Don Mitacek, who had to oversee a series of layoffs after Sept. 11.
"We laid off almost 400 people" in the first few weeks after the attacks, Mitacek said, as customers such as United Airlines and other commercial carriers grounded large portions of their fleets. The attacks also came near the start of...
