TELECOMWORLDWIRE-12 March 2001-REVIEW:Sair Linux and GNU Certification; Level 1 Networking (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com Linux is a durable, configurable, tractable, and most of all customisable piece of software, allowing corporate clients complete control over system configuration and upgrades. It can be utilised in many diverse circumstances such as real-time process control or as simple as a traditional 'off-the-shelf' database application. It is feasible to achieve three Linux certifications, allowing the user to complete become accustomed to the aforementioned upgrades and customisations and establish themselves as a professional. As Linux is a complete open source software system the certifications differ from other computer industries as it contains many layers of complexity which are not present in closed, binary, or object code-only systems. Tobin Maginnis, has produced this book with the aim of helping you obtain the 'Level 1: Sair Linux and GNU Certified Administrator (LCA)' certification. This level is split in to four steps and this book concentrates on the third step of the ladder to achieving the certification. Maginnis' study guide walks the reader step-by-step through all of the areas they will need to know when preparing for their test. The guide contains a collection of theories, principles, and facts that relate to the system administration of Linux and GNU software on the PC platform. The information is organised around a 'knowledge array' that contains only essential concepts and facts. In part one of this book Maginnis reviews the third row of the knowledge array. Part two provides laboratory exercises that reconsiders the concepts presented in part one. The final part provides sample questions as a review of the part one material, which works as an assessment guide. There is also a glossary of key terms and phrases mentioned in the book. The questions incorporated in the book are separated into parts according to the sequence of chapters. This layout allows you to assess your performance and revise the chapters where your knowledge is weak. The answers are provided but unfortunately with this method there is no valuable feedback. I actually worked through the questions in the book and managed to get over half of the 100 questions correct, this was achieved by briefly revising the information, thus giving me the conclusion that studying with this book would dramatically increase your chances of success. To further enhance this chance the 'labs and exercise' section provides the reader with the theory to various exercises, allowing you to put the knowledge into guided practice providing hands on experience. The overall layout of this book is excellent. Each aspect is placed under its own heading, clearly showing what topic the reader is currently learning. The language used is displayed in a clear and concise manner, allowing the user to absorb the information to the maximum of their ability. CONCLUSION:A valuable source of information with the specific aim of preparing you for your Level 1: Networking exam, enabling you to revise at your own speed.
