Bob and Helga Gold's store was one of three Pick 'n Save stores to open in the Milwaukee metro market last November.
Not one of the new stores bears much resemblance to the original Pick 'n Save Warehouse Foods, which opened in 1975 in Brookfield, Wis. That store had no fresh meat and only limited produce, recalls Jerry Lestina, who joined Roundy's five years before the Brookfield unit opened and is now president and chief operating officer of the company. The absence of fresh meat and the restricted produce selection didn't turn off shoppers, says Lestina. He remembers a long line of customers waiting to get into the store. "You've got to remember, we were in the heart of a recession in 1975," he says.
