QANTAS passengers should be using their mobile phones in flight within the next few weeks. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will monitor the three-month trial, which involves one modified 767 plying domestic routes. A Qantas spokesman said: "We've installed a Pico cell, which is a very low power re-transmitting device that allows the aircraft to act like a country in the sky - so you just put your mobile on to international roaming." Phones will be restricted to text messaging and e-mails in deference to their fellow passengers and will be charged international rates. Incoming calls will be restricted. CASA's comms manager Peter Gibson said the Pico meant that cellphones would only be emitting extremely low levels of power ? phones adjust the amount of power they put out according to how far they are the from the base station. "The base station is going to be just above your head," Gibson said.
