Tensions between Qatar and Saudi Arabia appear to have scuttled Qatari plans to export natural gas to neighboring Kuwait (EC Aug.19,p4). The two had signed off on terms for a 1 Bcf/d gas pipeline, Exxon Mobil did the engineering work, but since the line had to cross Saudi territorial waters it also needed Saudi approval. Comments this week from Qatari Energy Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al- Attiyah suggest the project is dead. "We waited for three years to solve this issue, but it didn't happen, so we have released the gas reserves for Kuwait to other projects," he told a Middle East gas summit in Doha.
