The Science and Technology Campus Corp. wants a $14 million loan from Ohio State University to finance construction of a building on the SciTech campus.
A facility of approximately 80,000 square feet off Kinnear Road would house offices for OSU's ElectroScience Laboratory and possibly two academic "centers of excellence," said Jonathan Young, associate director of the Electro Science Lab. One center would focus on developing systems that use radio waves in high-tech aerospace sensor applications. The other would create the materials and devices used as building blocks in those systems.
"Unless we get this money from the university, I don't think there is another way to get this project started," SciTech President Ora Smith said. "The whole thing would be 'academic' in the true sense of the word."
Smith planned to make the loan proposal to OSU trustees' Fiscal Affairs Committee on May 3, but action on the request isn't expected until the trustees meet June 7.
SciTech is an independent, nonprofit partnership between Ohio State, the city of Columbus and state of Ohio. It is the developer of the SciTech campus, a research park on Kinnear on OSU's west campus.
