CD-ROM helps doctors spot signs of abuse-and start asking questions
Most doctors and nurses aren't shy about asking patients whether they smoke, drink, have unsafe sex, or use seat belts, but many draw the line at home life and suspicions about domestic violence.
Inspired by a med school classmate involved in an abusive relationship, a St. Louis doctor has developed a CD-ROM program to help practitioners deal with suspected abuse victims. David Lickerman, an ER physician at Christian Hospital Northeast, created the program for doctors, nurses, dentists, and others on the front lines of care who are often first to see the effects of domestic abuse.
