The Philippine Postal Corporation issued a se-tenant strip of five marking the Birth Centenary of Five Great Filipinos to coincide with the celebration of the "Decade of Filipino Nationalism 1989-1998" pursuant to Proclamation No. 269 dated June 10, 1988.
Born on December 23, 1895 in Barrio Boloan, Dagupan City, Victorio C. Edades was known as the "Father of modern art in the Philippines." On March 27, 1976, he was proclaimed as a National Artist for painting. The following citation, signed by President Marcos, read "Victorio C. Edades, painter, architect, teacher and humanist, is the original iconoclast of Philippine Art. He changed the direction of Philippine painting, decisively ending the parochial isolation of Philippine art and placing it in the mainstream of international culture. In creating the environment for modern art he prefigured in theory and in practice the reigning international style of contemporary Philippine painting. In this sense, he is the true father of modern Philippine painting."
