Optimism is in short supply, but don't say that around Roy Ryniker and James Freeley.
Ryniker, owner of the Garden City consultants Reorganization Alternatives Group, and Freeley, a professor of business at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, both believe that by using planning and horse sense, businesses can survive and flourish in the southward economy.
An example of their optimism is Ryniker's belief that "you shouldn't waste the advantage of a recession," and Freeley's idea that now is the best time to start up certain businesses.
Ryniker's belief comes from his theory that whenever there's volatility in the economy opportunities emerge.
The economy is in a shambles and will be for an extended period to come, he said, but what people have to realize is this is different from other downturns.
Past economic heavy weather was caused by companies with too much debt. "Today the problem is that operating margins have shrunk. So it's different from the early '90s when a lot of companies loaded up on debt," Ryniker said.
