An 86-year-old botanical laboratory in Yonkers that fell into disuse and decay in 1978 when its parent institute moved to Cornell University is about to sprout new life.
BT Weinberg LLC., then based in Eastchester, bought the property from Yonkers in April 2007 for $6.4 million, according to City Council records.
The IDA board just induced a project for the Boyce Thompson site this a.m.," said Yonkers Industrial Development Agency President and CEO Ellen lynch in an email that referenced Dec. 30. "The $21 million project represents phase 1 of a two-phase project which will preserve the existing historic building. Ted Weinberg's company will begin the plan review process by mid-January." Lynch said later the two-plus-years of physical inaction included considerations regarding the fate of the main building. It will be saved, she said. She ascribed no significance to the BT-BAT variation, saying, "It's the same deal as was struck in 2007."
