Abstract

Guidelines for helping welders choose the appropriate apparel for both application and maximum safety include: 1. Always consider the application and such factors as heat, cold, spatter, impact, weight, and moisture. 2. Try on materials for comfort. 3. Choose value over low price. 4. Since underprotection is dangerous, ask for a special product when it is needed for a special application. 5. Do not use regular welding gloves for special jobs that require grasping very hot or very heavy materials. 6. Choose leather gloves for low-heat, maximum dexterity applications. 7. Select sizes and styles specifically designed for men or women. 8. Since aluminized gloves and clothing are reflective, do not use them when insulation or resistance from abrasion is needed. Service conditions, material characteristics, design features, and construction should be considered when buying welding gloves and clothing.
