Unlike our last workstation review (August 2001), which investigated the efficiencies of dual-processor systems running multiple applications simultaneously, we kept things simple this time around. We invited ten vendors to send workstations configured for serious 3D CAD modeling. Our minimum requirements were straight-- forward: 1 GB system memory, dual 40GB hard drives, a 3D OpenGL graphics card with 32MB of integrated memory, CD-RW (rewritable) drive, and Windows 2000 Professional. Six vendors took us up on our offer and sent a total of seven workstations: Compaq, Dell, IBM, Polywell, Sys Technology, and Xi Computers. Xi sent two workstations configured identically except for the processor-one was powered by a 2GHz Pentium 4, the other by a 1.5GHz Athlon. Two vendors (IBM and SYS Technology) focused on speed, configuring their workstations with the high-- performance, but expensive ($2,200), Wildcat II 5110 graphics card. The others emphasized value by offering good performance at a reasonable price. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? If you study the charts below, which show the relative performance and value of the seven workstations based on our suite of three benchmarks, two things become apparent. If price is no consideration, the Wildcat II 5110 is the card to beat when it comes to raw 3D CAD performance, This reinforces our initial conclusion from a preliminary review of the card in our April 2001 issue (p. 35). Of course, a faster card is likely right around the corner.
Of more lasting importance, AMD's Athlon processor is clearly faster than Intel's Pentium 4 processor. The pair of workstations from Xi Computer show conclusively that the 1.5GHz Athlon delivers more speed at the application level than the 2GHz Pentium 4. And keep in mind that compared to the Athlon, the Pentium 4 has a 33% advantage in raw clock speed. Throw in the fact that the Athlon-based workstation is cheaper, and there's little doubt that the Athlon offers the best value on the market today. -A.L.
