Paradigms, the way Joel Arthur Barker uses the term, are the rules and patterns of doing business. Old paradigms are habits and block managers' ability to think in creative ways. In his recent book, Future Edge: Discovering the New Paradigms of Success, Barker talks about new paradigms that will change the way we do business. He says it is every manager's job to identify the paradigms relevant to his or her business and create new paradigms of success.
Barker writes that "almost all major trends are triggered by a paradigm shift." In "Shifts for the 1990s," Chapter 13 of his book, he discusses the shifting paradigms that have influenced the '90s and those that will shape the decades to come. Here are some of the current and future paradigms he has identified.
