Additional details are emerging about the case of Richard Reid, the suspected suicide bomber who was subdued during the act of trying to ignite explosives in his shoes on an American Airlines (AMR) flight Dec. 22, 2001, from Paris to Miami (see ASW, Dec. 31, 2001). Sources relate that he was a profile selectee both on Dec. 21, when he first appeared at the airport check-in counter and on the morining he actually boarded Flight 63. The day before, he was turned over to French police; they cleared him, but by that time the flight had departed. The following morning he was screened again by French authorities (passport control, etc.).
