People between jobs, recent college graduates and adult children no longer covered under their parents' health plan are putting themselves at a financial risk if they lack medical or health insurance.
To address that need, Milwaukee-based Fortis Health, a part of Fortis Inc., is offering temporary insurance plans for as low as $24 a month to people that are not covered under permanent health insurance plans.
Fortis has been selling the temporary insurance plans for 27 years and has become the nation's largest distributor of short-term insurance coverage, said Kathleen Clark, marketing development director for the specialty products division.
The company has begun a pilot program to directly market the insurance to consumers, rather than through insurance agents, Billboards which list the $24 a month rate have been posted throughout Milwaukee the past three months to attract consumers to Fortis' temporary insurance plan, Clark said.
The $24-a-month quote for short-term insurance is for 18-year-old males who choose a plan with a $2,500 deductible for a one-month period.
Monthly rates for Fortis' short-term plans vary according to age, gender, location of residence and the amount chosen for the deductible.
