Once you've been a first-place winner, it's hard to swallow a second-place finish, but SGI's not complaining. Coming in second only to Sun Microsystems Computer Co. in the technical workstation category, Silicon Graphics Inc.'s Erna Arnesen says she's pleased with this year's Annual Report Card scores. Since last year's survey, the company bought Cray Research Inc. and practically transitioned its entire product line to new models, making it a tough year both financially and managerially.
Problems with the company's R10000 MIPS chip resulted in a recall late last year, causing reseller frustration, and likely resulting in the slight drop in scores SGI suffered in the products category, particularly in the area of availability. "That
really negatively affected people," says Arnesen, SGI's vice president of global channels.
