In September 1997, SilverPlatter Information launched its new use-based pricing service, Search by Search". This online service clusters 60 databases (although SilverPlatter has over 200 databases in its complete portfolio) into 13 subject clusters.
Historically, SilverPlatter started by mastering and distributing bibliographic databases on CD-ROM. They then moved into offering their data on the Internet via telnet, a DOS client, a Windows client (WinSPIRS) and the web (WebSPIRS). This data could be locally loaded or accessed at SilverPlatter's central server site. Libraries could then subscribe to databases via a concurrent user pricing model. The advantage to this...
