The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree. Penny Herscher, chairman and CEO of Simplex Solutions, follows some impressive achievers within her family. Her grandmother conducted vitamin C research at England's Cambridge University (She didn't get a degree only because the university did not confer degrees on women in 1924.) Ms. Herscher's mother received an engineering degree at Oxford University in 1982. And her father performed engineering work connected with early satellite development.
Ms. Herscher received her own mathematics degree from Cambridge in 1982. She joined Simplex as chairman and CEO in 1996. She previously had been general manager at Synopsis Inc.
