I've written a bit in the past about Java development for mobile devices, particularly the Java 2 Micro Edition Mobile Information Device Profile. MIDP devices now are solidly part of the mainstream and the future looks extremely bright for the RME platform.
Until now, I've never taken a Look at any specific J2ME development tools because they were few and far between and most are slimmed-down relatives of their "big brother" J2SE Integrated Development Environments, such as Borland's JBuilder MobileSet. A new tool from New Jersey-based Data Representations (www.datarepresentations.com), called Simplicity, offers a fresh new approach to Java application development. Interestingly, the company is aggressively targeting the mobile developer through a trio of tools, including Simplicity for Palm OS, Simplicity for Mobile Devices and Simplicity for Mobile Servers. Before diving into the details of these tools, I should mention that tools also are offered for desktop/server-side Java developers in the Simplicity for Java and Simplicity Professional IDEs.
