The Single Well-Aimed Shot
ONE SHOT, ONE KILL By Charles W. Sasser and Craig Roberts. Simon and Schuster, New York, 1990, 260 pp., $4.95. (Member $4.45)
A sign at the U.S. Marine Corps Sniper School spells out the basic philosophy of the school and the philosophy of snipers in general: "The most deadly weapon on any battlefield is the single well-aimed shot." One Shot, One Kill is a graphic account of this philosophy in action.
The account begins by highlighting the background of snipers and their importance. It touches on historical significance of the snipers' skill, the evolution of their tactics, and the refinement of equipment from the early days of firearms. Beyond that, and perhaps best of all, it contains some action-packed accounts of snipers and war as they waged it. Realism is the key. Sasser and Roberts have attempted to portray the grim business of war from a personal perspectivethrough a sniper's scope. The effect is both shocking and brutal.
The grisly view of the reality of sniping is achieved superbly by personal accounts....
