When 12-year-old Dario Cavalito is informed by his mother that he's going to summer camp, his response says it all: "What for? I haven't done anything!" A confirmed aquaphobe, Dario has never learned to swim properly, and Camp Kookum specializes in water sports. On the first day, all the campers are tested on their swimming skills. Dario fails miserably with his crazed dog paddle. Predictably, he is ridiculed by some of the other campers, especially the boastful Lindsay, who's an expert sailor. But secretly helped by a bookish friend, Dario finally learns how to do the backstroke and then announces he will learn sailing, just to prove himself to the smug Lindsay.
