The toughest part about The Wollongong Group Inc.'s new Emissary product is trying to describe it. Unlike products from companies such as Frontier Technologies Corp. and Spry Inc., which bundle several Internet tools in a single box, Emissary combines many Internet tools into a single, integrated application. Using a single menu, you can surf the World Wide Web, read newsgroups, create Web pages, send electronic mail and copy files to FTP sites.
You also can use these tools on a local TCP/IP-based "intranet" network. Even better, Emissary has some other innovative features that could change the way you work even when you're not connected.
In addition to being a powerful product, Emissary is a good value. With a retail price tag of $99 for the standard version and $199 for a version that includes a TCP/IP stack, it's really an affordable connection tool.
While the desktop version includes a Winsock-compatible TCP/IP stack, it does not include a dialer, so you will have to use a third-party product, such as the readily available Trumpet Winsock dialer, to initiate the phone call. Of course, if you use the stack across a LAN with an Internet gateway, such as Performance Technology Inc.'s Instant Internet, you don't need a dialer. Emissary works with Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT.
