MERIDIAN DATA'S recently released Snap Server 1.0 makes providing network storage a breeze for IS managers in small heterogeneous environments. Although Snap Server is no panacea, I found that for workgroup office storage needs, it lives up to its name: It installs quickly, is easy to use, and is painless to administer.
Though I was initially skeptical of the low-end storage concept, I found Snap Server to be a well-designed, well-thought-out, inexpensive product that supports Unix, NetWare, and Windows NT environments. Faring better in both design and price than the JES Net Raptor that I recently reviewed (see Product Reviews, May 11, page 132), Snap Server works well where there is a need for public access to small data stores.
But because of its limited access controls, I can't recommend Snap Server in an enterprise setting where security and access control is of critical importance.
Snappy design
