In these days of formatted commercial radio stations, there is still room for a little culture on the FM dial.
Classical music, combined with National Public Radio (NPR) news and local news, has provided WSHU (91.1-FM), a small nonprofit radio station in Fairfield with a niche market that receives substantial financial support from area corporations and individuals.
General manager George Lombardi said local businesses in particular have been instrumental in allowing the station to increase revenues while reducing "those annoying" on-air pledge drives by 80 percent.
In recent months, business-oriented "challenge pledges" have been successful in prompting listeners to match their given wagers, said Lombardi.
At the same time, Timex and other area businesses have helped raise funds by donating watches and other items...
