With the completion of the $26.5 million apartment complex, The Square at Falling Run in Morgantown is moving closer to its goal.
The estimated $260 million to $275 million project is predicted to provide retail shops that will serve more than 2,000 residents.
Construction of the first phase is wrapping up with the Augusta on the Square, a 158-unit apartment complex complete with an Internet cafe that also provides room service, a common area with seven LCD plasma screen televisions, library rooms and small fitness rooms.
"Things are happening now at a fast pace," said Kris Warner, managing member of The Augusta Apartments LLC. "It's pretty amazing to see it all together."
The Augusta provides safe housing for those associated with the university.
The complex is adjacent to the downtown campus, which allows residents to walk to classes or work without cutting into the traffic problem, Warner said.
This week the area will see the completion of concrete sidewalks, a final coat of blacktop on Falling Run Road and a finished courtyard area complete with a waterfall.
Though the project is running over a few weeks from the beginning of West Virginia University's fall semester, it originally was planned to take 18 to 20 months. It was condensed to 9 months, Warner said.
