Two of the Detroit area's largest cancer-treatment providers are opening major centers at a combined investment of $35 million.
St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, the 607-bed flagship hospital of St. John Health System' is spending $25 million for its Van Elslander Cancer Center, immediately behind the hospital in Grosse Pointe Woods.
The 69,000-square-foot center is designed for a holistic approach to cancer care, combining a treatment and diagnostic services with "healing" features such as a garden, meditative chapel and art gallery, said Mike Kairis, a St. John public-relations specialist.
