St. Vincent Charity Hospital has launched an $8.5 million fund-raising campaign to overhaul its emergency department and to provide money for additional programs and its endowment.
The downtown hospital, which primarily serves downtown residents and workers and the poor, is overhauling its 1960sera emergency room to make it more conducive to today's technology and health care standards, said Jeffrey Jeney, president of St. Vincent.
Construction work on the $6.9 million project is scheduled to begin in next year's first quarter and is expected to take 18 months to complete. The hospital already has raised $4 million for its capital campaign.
