The Texas Department of Insurance has placed AmCare Health Plans of Texas Inc. under conservatorship, leaving the Houston-based company's 83,000 enrollees unsure about the future of their health care benefits.
Conservatorship is an administrative proceeding ordered by the state commissioner of insurance. As the conservator, the state will actively participate in the company's operation.
This action means AmCare's 67,000 local members may be forced to search for alternative health care providers if the company can't negotiate a deal to sell its Medicare, Medicaid and commercial health maintenance organizations.
