In previous columns, I described the STEM process as a way of helping you and your hotel avoid litigation. The components of STEM are Selecting the right employee, Training the employee, Educating yourself and Managing and Motivating your employees.
Management and motivation go hand in hand and form the capstones of the STEM process. This four-step process has been designed to help you eliminate employee errors that lead to costly claims and litigation. It follows, therefore, that you adopt a complementary management philosophy.
It's important that you adopt a management philosophy, behavior and decision-making process before you find yourself in circumstances that require you to use it. Because they are personal to each manager and are, to a great extent, dictated by the personality of the individual, there are literally millions of management philosophies to employ.
