As part of its cross-platform redesign, Reader's Digest issued a major revision to its iOS apps in late December. The new universal app is among the better magazine editions on a smartphone that we have seen. It fits the brand's heritage: a true reader's experience.
We review the iPhone version here because it is on the diminutive handheld device where RD is notable. The Born to Be Brave January cover has a pop-up set of cover lines that serves as a translucent table of contents with direct links to such content as Everyday Heroes (pictured). The TOC itself is one of the only weak points in the app in that the many small bits to the full magazine telescope out to an unwieldy scroll of visual tiles and category headers. A more efficient index is needed.
But when you do navigate to an article, the reading experience itself is excellent. The text is oversized and highly legible on an iPhone. The cover story we read in...
